Keeping the essay short and sweet, but to the point, is an good way for you to have complete sentences. Proficient sentences do not have to be long but they do not need to be too short. For example, a student writes, “As this is spoken, I can create an image in my mind, using the description of the woman, of the sailor’s wife with just three lines of the playwright.” Using the lengthy description “I can create an image in my mind” starts to lose meaning, so avoid that. Keep it simple. No need to say “ I can create an image in my mind,” precisely replace it with, “I can imagine.” Keep it short and sweet, as well as clear. Being more straightforward will help a write create a more comprehensive essay worth reading. This does not only work with essays written for English essays, but also history, science, and language.
Being more specific is a huge adjustment to improving an essay, which could include names and titles of articles. For example, a student may write, “Similar to the article by Bethania Palma Markus, a study showed that a physics teacher gave the girls lower grades than the boys.” This is not specific enough. Specifying titles of works that relate to the rest of the response is important for the reader to have a clearer image of the essay. Instead, change it to “Similar to the article, ‘Shocking study reveals physics teachers give girls lower grade than boys– for the exact same answers.’” So in essence, be more specific.
Understanding titles is important because it tells the difference between long and short works. For example, a student wrote, “Adnan from Serial has a strong correlation with the character from Story of an Hour, Louise, by receiving freedom from the death of a loved one.” The mistake here is that titles of long works are written in italics while titles of short works are written in quotation marks. To avoid confusion, you should remember how to write long titles and short titles of books, articles, etc. Rather change it to “Adnan from Serial has a strong correlation with the character from “Story of an Hour,” Louise, by receiving freedom from the death of a loved one.” Title clarification is relevant for both the reader and writer to know the distinction between writing titles of long and short works.
