Boko Haram and Macbeth Too Similar for Comfort

Boko Haram is a terrorist group in Nigeria that is aiming to overthrow the current Nigerian government in order to put in place their own religious beliefs. This terrorist group is strongly against western education and culture, which is rapidly popularizing in certain parts of Africa. The activist and terrorist group Boko Haram has been known to kidnap and kill innocent civilians, mainly young girls, in order to prevent them from obtaining the western education to which they have the right to pursue. Recently, on February 9, Boko Haram kidnapped another twenty young girls. goo.gl/lmMyRz These events clearly show an urge and willpower for this group to achieve higher status, recognition, and power.
Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” shows a close similarity to the actions of Boko Haram. The main character, Macbeth, tries to also achieve a higher status and more power by becoming the King of Scotland and killing the precedent King Duncan. The bloodthirsty Macbeth also sacrificed the life of some of his most trusted friends such as Banquo, showing that he stopped at nothing in order to achieve his final goal of becoming King. Both Macbeth and Boko Haram are led by their extreme beliefs that what they are doing is the right thing to do. Driven by greed and relentlessness, Macbeth and the terrorist group Boko Haram do what they need and what they want to achieve their final goal whether it be replacing a King, or replacing an entire form of government.
