Butt Plugs, Left Shark Lawsuit, and Shakespeare

“Left Shark” has recently taken the meme world by a storm after his debut performance in Katy Perry’s Superbowl Halftime Show. Fernando Sosa, a 31-year-old male from Orlando, Florida, attempted to turn this pop culture personality into a 3D printed figurine for sale. This was an alternative to Sosa’s usual products which combine caricatures and political expression. Sosa makes crude jokes out of political personalities with his Putin butt plug and its counterparts. However, he is also raising awareness for animal rights issues with his “Sham-u the Sad Clown” design. Shortly after the Superbowl, Sosa released his apolitical Left Shark print for $24.99. Now Katy Perry is suing the artist. As of yesterday, Sosa is refusing to cooperate with the lawyer’s wishes and has instead set up a "Go Fund Me" Account which has raised $1,000 for his cause.
Upon close inspection, Shakespeare’s Macbeth bears a resemblance to this modern lawsuit. Sosa started his business by designing an innocent iPhone case while Macbeth began his journey as a loyal general of King Duncan. Sosa and Macbeth both saw a chance to improve their position and their desires trumped legal implications. Macbeth killed King Duncan and lived a charmed royal life for a short period of time before chaos ensued and he was beheaded for his deed. Sosa was able to sell his product in peace until February 5th when Perry’s lawyers contacted him. Sosa and Macbeth both refused to back down. Macbeth finally lost because Macduff and and Prince Malcolm raised a more powerful army. Unless public outrage surpasses the force of Perry’s lawyers, Fernando Sosa will lose his battle as well.
