How Different are Macbeth and ISIS?

Recently the terrorist group, Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has been receiving global attention in the media. The jihadist rebel group has been striving for power and they hope to ultimately gain support from the entire Islamic nation. Along their path to power they have not hesitated in brutally murdering many innocent people. Just this week the rebels released a video killing twenty-one innocent Christians, who had been kidnapped from Egypt. This outrageous deed shares much similarity with Macbeth’s actions in Shakespeare’s play.

Looking closely at Macbeth’s rise to the throne, many connections to ISIS appear. Macbeth’s murder of King Duncan closely resembles many of the ISIS killings in the past year. ISIS has worked to gain power through fear and they have not paused to kill and terrorize much of the Middle East. After Macbeth rises to the throne he orders the death of his friend, Banquo, and Banquo's son, Fleance. Both are innocent people and do not deserve to die. ISIS parallels these actions, and stops at nothing to gain more power and infamy. Both Macbeth and ISIS are greedy with their power, and rule as ultimate dictators with an iron fist. Where will we draw the line between fiction and reality?
